Narrative
The linguist tracked the dialect shift village by village. The new pronunciation had started at the capital in the center of the valley and spread outward each generation — first to the neighboring villages, then to the towns beyond. By the third survey every column had adopted it except the last. The mountain ridge between the third and fourth columns was too high, the pass too rarely traveled. The easternmost column, cut off by granite, still spoke the way their grandparents had. The new dialect could not cross what feet could not climb.
