The marine biologist filmed the reef flat over four days. Life colonized from one edge inward, anemones and urchins claiming each strip of rock in turn. By the third morning every square was teeming. But that afternoon a rogue swell crashed over the outer wall — the side the reef had colonized last — and scoured that newest strip bare. The next tide brought new larvae, and by the fourth morning the flat was full of life again.
